In the Name of Beauty : A Special Exhibition on the Culture of Chinese Footbinding

2025/05/03 ~ 2025/11/16

The three-inch golden lotus is not only a physical manifestation of the body within the tides of history but also a collective memory shaped by cultural aesthetics and societal values.

With nearly a millennium of history, the custom of footbinding originated among aristocratic circles and gradually spread to common households. It was more than an expression of clothing culture—it influenced personal destinies and represented family honor. Once popular throughout the regions of the Yangtze River and beyond, footbinding even captivated non-Han women of the Qing dynasty, making it one of the most widespread and enduring phenomena in Chinese cultural history.

This special exhibition features an exceptional private collection generously loaned by Dr. Ke Ji-Sheng, Director of Guangchuan Hospital, who has dedicated over four decades to collecting footbinding artifacts. With more than 100 precious objects on display, the exhibition takes visitors on an in-depth exploration of the craftsmanship and cultural context surrounding footbinding, particularly those unique to Taiwan and southern Fujian.

We sincerely invite audiences to re-examine this deeply influential chapter in women's history through multiple lenses—anatomy, symbolic sexuality, textile craftsmanship, and societal transformation.
